2024

The Refugee Law and Migration Center at the “Iustinianus Primus” Law Faculty, University Ss. Cyril and Methodius-Skopje, with the support from the UNHCR Representation in North Macedonia, will host the 5th Summer School on Refugee Rights and Migration between 16-20 September 2024. The focus topic for the 2024 edition will be: “International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless People: Borders, Nationality, and Perspectives from the Global South.” This 5-day intensive Summer School is designed to help participants gain basic and intermediary knowledge about international refugee law and the protection of stateless people, and foster commitment among the audience to advocate for the rights of refugees and other persons in need of protection worldwide.

AUDIENCE PROFILE

The program is open to students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, from different educational disciplines. The Summer School does not require applicants to have previous knowledge of international refugee law. The only prerequisite is that applicants must have taken at least one introductory course in social science, political science, history, or law. To retain the interactive character of the sessions in the agenda, a maximum of 50 participants will be accepted to the program. The organizers will look to create a highly diverse cohort in terms of geographical and educational background. Students with lived experience of forcible displacement are particularly encouraged to apply. More technical details about the application process are listed below.

LECTURER PROFILE

Participants will have the chance to learn from a diverse pool of international experts, including well-respected academics from universities around the world and practitioners from international organizations such as UN agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations. The interactive sessions provide a platform to ask questions, share ideas, and cultivate professional relationships that could extend beyond the confines of this Summer School.

Learning Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The overall goal of the Summer School is to raise awareness of student audiences on issues of international refugee law and the protection of stateless people, focusing on the challenges faced by forcibly displaced persons and stateless individuals, especially in the Global South. Framed around this year’s focus – “International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless People: Borders, Nationality, and Perspectives from the Global South” – the Summer School seeks to provide a comprehensive perspective on refugee protection and statelessness. The program delves into diverse causes and impacts of statelessness, from legal frameworks to socio-economic consequences. The Summer School sheds light on the multifaceted aspects of nationality and borders, including their political, social, cultural, and economic dimensions. The Summer School aims to provide basic and intermediate knowledge and encourage students to pursue future professional careers in this area. Our aim is to cultivate strong advocates for refugees and stateless individuals among our participants, who will become future academics, practitioners, and policymakers. We aim to equip a new generation with nuanced understanding and experiential knowledge on refugee and statelessness issues, fostering their capacity to critically engage with related topics.

THEREFORE, BY THE END OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
  • Demonstrate a deeper understanding of international refugee law and the protection of stateless people.
  • Analyze contemporary challenges in refugee protection in the Global South.
  • Identify and explain the international legal protection framework for refugees and stateless persons.
  • Understand and classify different categories of persons in need of protection.
  • Examine the concepts of sovereignty and border control in relation to statelessness.
  • Еvaluate the challenges of constitutional protection of the rights of applicants for international protection
  • Explore issues of nationality and citizenship within the Global South.
